TPWD - Natural Resources Specialist IV (Wildlife District 1 Senior Biologist) Location: Alpine, TX TPWD MISSION : To manage and conserve the natural and cultural resources of Texas and to provide hunting, fishing and outdoor recreation opportunities for the enjoyment of present and future generations. General Description Under the supervision of the Wildlife Division District 1 Leader, the Senior Wildlife Biologist is a senior-level natural resources professional who leads an 18-county area of responsibility. The role involves advanced wildlife and habitat management in the Chihuahuan Desert Ecoregion, mentorship of less‑tenured biologists, development of technical guidance for land owners, and coordination of wildlife management communications through publications, clinics, seminars, and media. Responsibilities Conduct advanced wildlife and habitat management in the Chihuahuan Desert. Mentor less‑tenured biologists and lead cross‑functional teams. Develop and implement plans for management techniques and harvest levels. Coordinate dissemination of wildlife management information to landowners, hunters, and the public. Identify training needs and facilitate training. Ensure compliance with agency policies and procedures. Perform additional duties as assigned. Qualifications Minimum Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in Wildlife Science, Wildlife Management, Wildlife Ecology, or a closely related natural resources field. Minimum 24 credit hours in wildlife and habitat conservation or research. Five years of progressive professional biologist experience. Valid Texas Class “C” driver’s license within 30 days of employment. National Wildfire Coordinator Group (NWCG) Fire Fighter Type II certification within one year of employment. Ability to meet physical fitness standards (FFTII moderate or arduous). Must perform low‑level aerial surveys. Preferred Qualifications Experience with farm and ranch practices. Experience working with rural landowners. Experience with big game and upland bird management. Project management experience. Acceptable Substitutions Master’s degree in a related field substitutes for one year of experience. Ph.D. substitutes for up to two years of experience. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Knowledge of wildlife life histories, habitat needs, and ecosystem management. Proficiency in written and verbal communication, outreach program planning, and scientific data analysis. Expertise in MS Office, habitat enhancement techniques, and project management. Ability to mentor, coordinate with diverse stakeholders, and make independent decisions. Working Conditions Standard work hours 8:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m., Monday–Friday with flexibility on holidays and weekends. Up to 40 % travel, possible overnight stays. Outdoor work in variable weather. Compliance with dress, grooming, and safety standards.
