Role Overview

This position is responsible for conceptualizing, engineering, and delivering custom mechanical systems and tooling that support manufacturing operations. The role blends hands-on design work with project ownership, supplier coordination, and on-site support to ensure equipment is delivered safely, on time, and within budget.

Core Duties

• Engineer custom mechanical solutions and production tooling aligned with customer requirements, operational needs, and commercial constraints
• Develop fabrication-ready design packages using 2D and 3D CAD tools (SolidWorks preferred), ensuring compliance with applicable standards and best practices
• Integrate safety, usability, reliability, and efficiency into all designs, with attention to cycle time, ergonomics, serviceability, and long-term durability
• Identify, specify, and source mechanical components and assemblies; define build scopes, initiate purchasing activities, and monitor material flow
• Generate detailed cost proposals for new and revised equipment, including pricing, timelines, labor estimates, throughput assumptions, and material utilization
• Coordinate with outside engineering firms, integrators, or fabricators when specialized capabilities or capacity are required
• Provide technical oversight during build, installation, commissioning, troubleshooting, and refurbishment activities
• Create and maintain technical documentation such as operating instructions, safety procedures, and preventive maintenance standards
• Support production and maintenance teams by delivering equipment training and contributing to standardized work and training documentation

Required Background

• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related field preferred; substantial hands-on industry experience may be considered in lieu of formal education
• Minimum of 5 years’ experience designing mechanical equipment, tooling, or automation in a manufacturing or industrial setting
• Strong working knowledge of CAD-based mechanical design (SolidWorks strongly desired)
• Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects concurrently and adapt to shifting priorities
• Practical experience applying DFMEA and PFMEA principles in equipment or process design

Technical Knowledge Base

• Mechanical system and machine design fundamentals
• Material behavior, stress analysis, and load calculations
• Statics, motion analysis, and mechanical dynamics
• Pneumatic and hydraulic systems, including basic fluid mechanics
• Metals, heat treatment processes, surface finishes, and protective coatings
• Dimensional tolerancing, fits, and finishing requirements
